Salt substitutes allowed in standardized foods to help cut sodium

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is issuing a final rule, effective December 14, 2026, that permits salt substitutes in standardized foods to reduce their sodium content. The FDA says reducing sodium may help reduce the risk of hypertension, a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. The rule gives industry flexibility to produce lower-sodium standardized foods while keeping their basic nature and essential characteristics.

Proposed spiny dogfish harvest limits for 2026 and 2027, with looser rules on overages

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) proposes Framework Adjustment 7 to the Atlantic spiny dogfish fishery management plan, as recommended by the Mid-Atlantic and New England Fishery Management Councils. It would set allowable harvest levels for fishing year 2026 and projected 2027 to prevent overfishing, and would no longer require full payback of annual catch limit (ACL) overages when the stock is considered healthy, giving the commercial fishery more flexibility.

Gear marking and entanglement rules for Pacific coast groundfish fishery

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is issuing a final rule that sets gear marking requirements and entanglement risk reduction measures for parts of the Pacific coast groundfish fishery, effective January 11, 2027. The rule has mandatory requirements and voluntary measures, and is made under the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act. The gear marking is meant to make it easier to attribute an entanglement to a specific fishery and gear type, and the risk reduction measures aim to cut bycatch by lowering the chance that marine animals become entangled in fishing line.
